Review by pageturner19 -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival...
If you inhabit a world that contains elements of magic, it's a given that you are going to experience upsets and difficulties; that will threaten to destroy the fragile balance between peace and prosperity, war and devastation. On one side of the coin are those who believe in using their magical talents to better the world and help its people; however, flip the coin over and you will find those who use their magic solely to further their own gain. Galen Bray has just left the only home he's ever known; a place where the peaceful have fled to preserve themselves elsewhere, and abundant food is a dream unless you're rich. Little does he know; that the place to which he travels is not as marvellously happy and content as he believes it to be. Shortly after he arrives, he's thrown headfirst into danger and adventure. With crimes being committed, motives being questioned, and sides being taken, loyalties and beliefs are about to be put to the test and challenged like never before. With many stories coming together to form something greater in the end, will Galen land on his feet? Or will he stumble and fall along the dangerous path he now treads? Don your armour, grip the reins tight and ride headlong into this adventure to find out.
After finishing the book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, I concluded that there are two things I like about this novel. The first, being the writer's accuracy when it came to the uses and properties of natural materials such as iron for example. And secondly, I also enjoyed the tension, sarcasm, and occasional light-hearted banter between the characters as the tale went on.
Despite liking the two features I mentioned previously, there were also a couple of things I didn't like about this book. There were times when I felt the author had been overly and unnecessarily descriptive in his writing. As a reader, it is important to give the writer a chance to describe and explain things to you; especially when they have created an entirely new world with its own words, customs, and traditions. But after a while, I began to wish that the author would focus less on every tiny detail and more on the actual story. Lastly, I found it frustrating that the theme of this publication felt like it jumped back and forth between timelines. For the most part, this book appears to be set in a medieval-type era, with an almost Victorian style of speech. But, interjected into the writing at frequent intervals, are many modern-day phrases and uses of speech, coupled with modern technology and modern customs. Because of this, I struggled to immerse myself in the magical world, created by Matthew Tysz, or to find this fantasy land as gripping or believable as I would have liked. However, to be fair; that is my individual opinion. There will be many readers I'm sure, who will thoroughly enjoy this work of fiction.
I would recommend this Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel, to readers who like tales such as Star Trek, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings. Due to some mature content, I would not recommend this book to readers under the age of seventeen.
I would like to state, that I did not find a single typographical or grammatical error within this publication. Because of this, I am happy to say that the book was obviously well edited by a professional editor.
I am giving this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. This is because I felt the author should have made more effort towards his creation and could have avoided the clashing themes and eras prominent from beginning to end. Had he done this, I would have enjoyed the story far more, and it would have received full honours if that had been the case.
