Review by Ivvie Ivanova -- Mirrored Worlds by Tayma Tameem
Mirrored Worlds is the first book of the same-title series by Tayma Tameem. It is a fantasy novel set in a reality that has been gifted with magic thousands of years ago.
Humanity progresses and learns to use magic more and more until disruptions start occurring across the nation. Natural disasters increase. Something is not right and it must be fixed before it's too late. That is the mission of our trio of unlikely heroes. Lila, Battleaxe, and Graute are tasked with finding the reason for the natural disasters, a non-magical baby born in a magical world. They have to get the baby through a double-sided mirror and into the non-magical world where it belongs. That would restore balance and save both worlds from destruction.
Lila is an inexperienced young woman versed in magic but nowhere near masterful at it. Battleaxe is a veteran in the art of war. Graute is a criminal, talented at the smuggling business. Their chemistry and comradeship are nowhere near perfect, but they each have their personal goals. Their imminent death unless they succeed at their mission is the only thing that brings them together.
Although the premise of the book is quite grand, the conflict within the pages is minuscule. There are natural disasters occurring across the nation, devastation grows, and the trio has to save two worlds, not one. Still, the novel is slow-paced, not very exciting at all, and the point of it is to have the characters physically move forward. In terms of experiences, the story is lacking. I expected a lot more drama as they travel and among the characters who supposedly don't get along but work perfectly as a team. The characters don't reveal much depth to their personalities either. I keep in mind that this is the first book of the series, so perhaps my expectations are answered in the second book and so on.
I recommend this novel to fantasy-lovers that want something easy to read, without a lot of information or large casts. If you prefer a more grand fantasy read with intrigue and other elements such as magical systems, drama, love, gore, etc, this book is not for you
I rate this novel 3 out of 4 stars because it is very well written and had no spelling or grammatical errors I could find. However, it did not grab my personal tastes and it did not make me want to reach for the second book.
