Review by Rae27 -- The Elfkin Journals: Blending of the ...
The Elfkin Journals: Blending of the Races by JDeVereS is a fantasy novel which details the story of Warder Garith De' Graoin alongside his team of Elfkin - "The Misfits" - and their fight against the Supreme Leader and Prime Acolyte, Adad. This story spans across several lightyears and an alternate universe whilst also containing bravery, love, friendship, perseverance and rebellion. The Misfits gain assistance from by their mind stones which help them complete their work. However, their mind stones also allow them to catch glimpses of the people who they must save and warn them of the people's if they fail.
Upon reading, I noticed that the novel included an array of misused punctuation and the occasional odd choice of quotation mark placement. After further reading, I concluded that this must be a strange stylistic choice made by the author.
Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There were moments when the novel dragged out a scene for too long. However, there were also moments of action which seemed to progress the story at a good pace. Some characters came across two-dimensional at times though I believe that this was an intentional choice to let the plot shine.
I mean, the plot was never centred around the characters but more around the journey to end an empire and the ability to recover from the strife caused a as result of said empire. Though not perfect, it is clear to see the amount of effort, time and detail that JDeVereS put in to build an entire world between the pages of The Elfkin Journals.
Alongside the generous amount of detail in the world setting, JDeVereS also proposes a theory similar to all life being interconnected, no one truly ever dies and that love is a force which connects us all whereas hate and greed are the roots of all destruction.
This novel truly impressed me and filled my time of reading it with joy. Through the mass of descriptions thrown your way, it was always easy to work out where you were in the novel though it could be overpowering at times such as the descriptions of the modern Elfkin structures on Earth. Despite this, I must extend a hearty review of 3 out of 4 stars. This novel can be picked up quickly by those with a passion for fantasy writing accompanied by a dash of science however, this review does come with a small warning. I do not encourage reading if you cannot handle long, rambling descriptions.
