We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, is an unpredictable science fiction and fantasy novel, the first in its series, We are Voulhire, by Matthew Tysz. Voulhire is a kingdom loaded with wealth, mystery, uncertainties, fame and magic. The tale begins by introducing the protagonist , Galen who originates from the Land of the Princes, a place known for death, battle and starvation. Galen’s life took an extraordinary turn when news reached him that his late uncle had passed a great inheritance to his name. Off he went, on a boat to Magnum Caelum, a small town in Voulhire, where he inherited his uncle's forge business under the supervision of Rowan, a trusted employee and executor of his uncle.

The book is written in different points of views of the characters and so, the readers get acquainted with the characters simultaneously. One key character was Lord Eldus. Lord Eldus was a good man who was sent to Hillport to bring reformation to the land and to fix some damages caused by the previous wicked ruler of the land, Lord Orlin and Meldorath, a mage that was dreaded by all and was rumored to be dead. But, is Meldorath really dead? Will Lord Eldus succeed in solving the riddles hovering over the peace of the land? Will Galen survive in Voulhire? The book will take you through a series of bends and twists in a bid to uncover the answers to these questions.

Matthew Tysz did an impressive job in bringing the characters of this complex but interesting plot to life. The character I like most is Rowan. I feel attracted to his high spiritedness, sense of humor and I find his loyalty to his employer, refreshing. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an eventful book that is mystery and suspense filled. I particularly appreciate that the scenarios are portrayed in a hot, connecting and dramatic way that paints pictures in the readers’ minds, enabling them to get a full handle of the plot. Telling the story from different perspectives is a plus for the book, because it highlights the exuberance and roles of the different characters.

The frequent switching back and forth of the different characters however, affected to a significant extent, my flow-ability in reading the book. I had to re-read some parts to completely comprehend what was going on. I disliked this about the book. Also, although Rowan is my favorite character, I found his way of handling women to be completely disrespectful. On more than one occasion he treated and talked about women as though they were sex objects. In some other part of the book, a mage utilized his power to make a female observer have an undesirable climax. These scenarios were offensive to me, and I completely disliked that the book portrayed these scenes as funny and acceptable scenes.

By and large, the book is intriguing and by all accounts, professionally edited. I found no grammatical errors or misspellings. Taking into consideration my likes and dislikes of the book. I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, a rating of Three out of four stars. I hold back one star because of the challenge in flow-ability that I encountered and also because of the sexist scenes. I recommend the book to teenagers and adults that love fantasy and are not repulsed by magic.
