Review by Rae27 -- The Evolutionite Chronicles Book One:...
The Evolutionite Chronicles Book One: Dagger and Shadow Ninja by Timothy P. Callahan is a superhero fiction novel published in 2017. The novel details the adventures of brothers Tanaka (Dagger) and Daniel (Shadow Ninja), who were both once members of Haven's police force comprised of superheroes, the Protectors. The Ex-Protectors live in Haven, Pennsylvania - a town overflowing with peculiar events, consistently under threat from its superpowered population and the world outside its borders. The brothers now run a postal service employing the various Evos (people with special abilities) occupying Haven as well as this they also provide the occasional protective services to those who need it.
On one seemingly ordinary day, a man named Lancaster Jones appears, claiming that a bomb is about to go off. Upon questioning, Jones reveals that he is from the future, sent back to Daniel and Tanaka's time to ensure that everything goes right. It soon becomes apparent that "right" means the explosion of the bomb. The bomb's explosion creates a glowing sphere of energy capable of controlling time. It also becomes clear that "right" means the object finding its way into the hands of a rancorous man set on exacting revenge on all those that have wronged him. Can the mighty Dagger and Shadow Ninja fix the future and save their present all the while racing against time?
This novel kept on my toes the whole time, get it? In all seriousness, I enjoyed my reading of this novel. I was overwhelmed with excitement from each page which resulted in me reading every moment possible, begging to know what would happen next. The humorous dialogue between the characters further fanned my flame for knowledge. If there is one thing that Timothy P. Callahan excels at it is most certainly creating a compelling setting throughout The Evolutionite Chronicles Book One: Dagger and Shadow Ninja.
Another point that I love about this novel is the realistic sibling characters who seem as though their conversations and interactions could occur in real life. Among the two characters, I must admit that Tanaka is my favourite, perhaps due to his strange sense of humour. Even whilst amid an altercation, he still finds a way to aggravate his opponent in only a few words/actions. He even goes to the extent of lecturing an opponent on how to threaten properly with specific statements. Above is only one example of Tanaka's personality that caused me to let out a small laugh.
Despite my profound love for this novel, I do have one an issue with it. The introductory chapter seemed to contain an array of irrelevant information which did not appear throughout the rest of the novel. It described things such as powers which were not very relevant to the rest of the plot. Regardless of this, the introduction chapter was interesting. Overall, the introduction seemed to contain information which made the transition into the first chapter more confusing than it should have been.
This novel requires another round of edits as there are some missing and misused words. Although I love this novel very much, I am unable to give it four stars due to the previously mentioned errors and the introductory chapter which was not necessarily needed. As a result of this, I am bestowing this novel a review of 3 out of 4 stars. This novel will be easily enjoyed by those interested in superhero fiction work. As it is a book about superheroes, there is a small degree of violence which is not gory or bloody in the slightest.
Upon the chance that this novel sounds like your cup of tea, go ahead and read it. If you love it as much as I do you needn't even have to wait for the next four novels in the series.
