Review by Tatum Sieni -- We are Voulhire: The Ascension ...
We are Voulhire: The Ascension of Akistry by Matthew Tysz is the fifth edition in the We are Voulhire series.
The Chaletherian Knights have defeated the Riva Rohavi resulting in the death of Siden of Chalethire, making him a Martyr. The surviving soldiers have fled and are hiding out in the town of Pudo. Meanwhile, Chancellor Maido fearing for his life flees to Diamora in the Dire Vine Jungle, an alleged academy where the Mianoran Knights are trained.
Meldorath has revealed himself publicly and is hosting sermons as the news of his role in defeating the Riva Rohavi and the Emperor of Lullabies retreating his ships has spread which in turn has given the people faith in the new Eiodi with some are even referring to him as their personal guide and savior.
Demetrius has gained favor with the town's officials and others who want him to steward the church but there is much hesitation from his side. Coupled with his previous revelation of not believing in God, he is torn between his duties and following Meldorath as the new Eiodi whom he does not trust. Desperate to take action, our heroic trio travel to the Dire Vine Jungle in search of Akistry, the lizard prophet from the Order of Joshua, who they believe has a direct connection to God and will challenge Eiodi Meldorath and the Church of Destinism and restore order.
Meanwhile, King Nartik finds and publishes a manual on how a common man can learn to use the cosmic powers and Paladin Harper Renard determined to rule as Queen one day, seeks unusual and dangerous alliances.
What I enjoyed most about the book was the development and complexity of each character's arc without there being an overload of information. I am especially excited and intrigued to see the role Galen's character will have in the next book.
What I disliked most about the book was the lack of explanation on how Marshus Alderman went from being a spoiled and selfish teenager to a skilled assassin in a short couple of months. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it was packed with action, deceit and drama. I felt it was expertly edited and found no spelling or unintentional grammatical errors. Therefore I will be rating this book a 4 out of 4 stars.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read the previous novels in the series as well as science fiction and fantasy genres, however, it does contain profanity and references to sexual behavior and is therefore not suitable for children under the ages of 14 years.
