Review by Alyssa -- We are Voulhire: The Ascension of Ak...
“The kind of knowledge discussed in that book was banned so effectively by the mage-kings that Voulhire is still clueless after five hundred years. It could very well be, Lucius, that we’ve lost touch with an important part of ourselves.” The rediscovery of one book could change everything. Voulhire may never be the same. We are Voulhire: The Ascension of Akistry by Matthew Tysz is about a world where magic, faith and science all co-exist.
Galen, through no ordinary dream, is visited by the Emperor of Lullabies. As a result, he and his friends (Demetrius and Rowan) descend into the dangerous and mysterious realm of the Dire Vine Jungle, to Diamora. They seek out a creature like nothing Galen or Rowan have ever seen before. This creature goes by the name of Akistry. The trio will learn from this creature but will it be enough to help to overthrow the current eiodi (pronounced eye-uh-die)? Just what is it that the eiodi has planned? It’s a battle of magic, knowledge and wits.
Readers will find a convenient map of Voulhire at the beginning of this book, with a reference guide at the end. Enjoy some funny insults and new words like aphrodisiac and curmudgeonly to add to your vocabulary. The book is written from different character's perspectives, clearly labelled at the top of each chapter. With so much going on across the nation, I found this extremely helpful. What I liked most is how the characters have developed throughout the series. The bond between Galen, Demetrius and Rowan grows, they even have nicknames for each other. In a very real way, they have a magnificent, blooming friendship.
The thing I disliked most, and the only thing, was the ending. Only because so many things happened and then I am left to wait and wonder what will happen in the next book and how, or even if everything will be resolved. This book would not be suitable for younger audiences as it contains some profane language and has a “Festival of flesh”, although the sex is not described in any detail.
My rating is 4 out of 4 because like the other books, it follows this intriguing world with these great characters. It is difficult to put down. I couldn’t rate it anything lower, even with the cliffhanger at the end of the book, as I enjoyed it too much. It seems well edited as I only found a few typos. This book would be best suited for people who enjoy dark fantasy with magic, science, faith and complicated people.
This is the fifth book in the We are Voulhire series and is not intended as a stand-alone. Please start with the first book, We are Voulhire: Under Great New Skies.
