Matthew Tysz has done it again. The King of May is the second book in the series, The Turn. This book begins one month since the turn happened and depicts how people survive and have to adapt to the new world. With the gods and goddesses having a power struggle, fighting amongst one another to be the one true ruler of all, it begins to affect the mortals and their survival. Cattleprod, a mortal being, now the ruler of Interstate, strikes up a deal with the heroes of this book to rid the world of these power-hungry gods. Scholar and Ashley, now walking around with the reputation of being hit-men, embark on their mission, trying to save this world after the turn, removing these threats one by one. The King of May, a god that can control the sun, is one of the most influential of them all. Tricking, torturing, manipulating, and wreaking havoc on the people of his kingdom, the heroes of this book have no choice but to find a way to rid the world of this influence.

Let me start off with this. I picked up on the fact that you can read this book without having to read the first book in the series. But there are a few references made to the first book and the mention of characters that were in the first book. So even if the book makes sense on its own, I would advise you to read the first book, The Turn, if you are a reader who needs all the information. After reading a few of Matthew Tysz’s books, I have become a real fan of this author. His writing style is one I enjoy because of how descriptive he is. The way he would play with your imagination by describing every scene in detail. He has this gifted ability to plant the reader into a world he has created, and of course, as a reader, that is all your asking for – great imagination and an enticing reading experience.

One point I have a problem with at the beginning of the book, though important to the storyline, I felt it started slowly. There wasn’t an element that grabbed me at the beginning, lacking that quality that makes me want to say, “oh no, what will happen next?” I only really felt this way once I was already 1/3 way through with the book. But I will admit, once the action began, the hits kept coming, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. There are some sexual references and profanity throughout the book, so I know for a few readers, you might not enjoy the book to the fullest due to this.

You can also pick up on the book being edited because I did not notice any grammatical errors, which made this a pleasant read. So keeping all these elements in mind, I happily award The King of May by Matthew Tysz 3 out of 4 stars.

Those sci-fi/fantasy lovers out there and people who enjoy a good spin on a post-apocalyptic world, I know you will get your fix from this book. As for younger readers, I don’t believe this book is appropriate for them due to the sexual scenes, vulgar language, and somewhat violent scenes. With this only being the second book in this five-book series, there is a lot more for us to look forward to.
