Tephra Rising: The Colony by K. C. Weston is a thrilling post-apocalyptic novel set in an underwater civilization known as the Colony. This cross between a sci-fi and dystopian book stars heroine Cynthia Frank. Cynthia is a veteran who fought against the Alliance that now works as a lawyer. She is unsatisfied with her job, and her boss is cruel to her. She can’t move up in the world because she isn’t a member of the Alliance. Then, in a series of events, a recruiter tells Cynthia about a wonderful and peaceful underwater city, free from the Alliance’s grasp. Cynthia quits her job and travels to the Colony. After Cynthia gets placed on One and gets her new name Tephra, she finds out that things may not be as they seem. The Supreme Principal is destroying the Colony from the inside and he wants to wage war on the world. Tephra uncovers his plot and is horrified that she might be too late. Will Tephra summon the courage to rally the entire Colony against Supreme Principal Cosmotine and his powerful army?

The book is really well written. It is fast-paced, action-packed, and does not have a slow moment. The plot is intricate and has many plot twists you will never see coming.

I liked how easy it was to connect with the characters. By the end, I was cheering for the characters. It follows the perspective of Tephra, Cosmotine’s right-hand-man Ember, and field hand-turned guard Flint. The odds are ten-to-one, yet the characters still have faith in each other. They went through some good character development and they had good interactions. I loved 11’s character and his reactions to 93. He was a good comic relief in the very serious moments of the book.

The one downside of the book is the number of errors. There were almost ten, although they did not affect the reading at all. Once the book is reread and edited, it will be perfect. I have no other complaints about there is nothing else to complain about.

The book had a slight amount of profanity, though it was not very bad.

I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. The only reason the book lost a star was because of the errors. However, do not let that stop you from reading this. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes sci-fi, dystopian, or post-apocalyptic novels. It is a great read and I would probably read it again. The book is a great lead for the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to read the next book!
