Graced by a golden age, Voulhire is celebrating the successes of their king, and their founding saints. Of course, there are those who are acting in their own interests in the shadows, but who is the enemy they should be most worried about? Will they find out in time?

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the introductory novel by Matthew Tysz in his We are Voulhire series. The exploration of human nature, and psychology is predominant throughout this book. With multiple seeming villains, and the limited explanation for their motivations, the reader is put into a situation where they hold key information. But is the narrator reliable? Galen Bray acts as a conduit to put yourself into the story, innocent with a lot to learn about this new world. And there is a lot to learn.

It is obvious that all of the details in this book are important to the story, but at times, the passages feel a little long winded. Why spend so much time with a character who is barely interesting, how are they involved when they just seem like a selfish old fogie? Are they even involved in the plots we are shown?

The book is written in such a way as to make you certain of who the bad guy is, and the next make you wonder if you were wrong. In some ways, the shear number of people who are displayed as the enemy is a little overwhelming. Along side Galen, I found myself in love with this land, even with limited information. The number of bad actors left me wondering how there could be a happy conclusion to this series, and all the more certain I had to continue reading to find out.

Overall, I give the book a 3 out of 4 rating. Matthew Tysz has a compelling way of writing even the most long winded explorations of human psychology, and I never felt like putting the book down and taking a break from it. It is a book that I can definitely see myself suggesting to others in the future, but it is not a book that will be for everyone.
