We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is a book about the industrial growth of Virko and the political powers’ struggle. Venden, the lord of Virko, had planned to replace feudalism with capitalism and the election of lords. Meanwhile, Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius went to Virko to acquire an iron reserve. Similarly, Dragan had organized a party for newly appointed Captain Mendus, which Hans, Venden’s son, attended. By then, Lord Venden was critically ill. Kayden and Mendus discussed powers’ transfer without Hans’s interference. After Venden’s death, Hans took over. As demons broke loose and killing people, Meldorath also killed Eiodi Gadesh and replaced him. Hans also killed Kayden’s wife and tortured Peter as revenge. Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius returned to the Land of Prince, escaping the demons’ wrath. Dragan offered the demons to rule the city in exchange for sparing people’s lives.

My favorite part is when Demetrius went to the church, persuading the priests to help him cleanse demons in Lord Venden’s house, and the priests refused, claiming that they needed first to sleep. When he threatened to kill them, they requested for their death after they have had enough sleep. I like the selflessness of Lord Venden, the founder of Virko city. He wanted the lords to be elected and not to inherit the position. He did this even though his son was to inherit the lordship after him.

Conversely, the start of the book with an abusive scene is not a good idea. In the first pages, the watchmen undressed a woman and acted on her. I don’t think that should have been in the first chapter. I find it morally incorrect for a mother to feed her kind with the father’s vices. When Hans asked his mother whereabouts of his father, his mother said, “He’s busy fornicating,”…

I find some gaps in the book where Lord Venden instructed his servant to give Demetrius and his friends a blueprint of his house. They were moving from one room to the other without a guard. It’s not logical that Meldorath’s castle was being guided by boys when Alabaster visited. The church Priests lived a contrary life. They came back from Mendus’s party while drunk.

I recommend the book for persons who love fantasy novels and funs of the “We are Voulhire” series. I may not recommend it for those who fear demons as demon’s scenes are abundant. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars , as the novel is engaging. However, Mr. Tysz didn't adequately develop some scenes and characters that appear to have a significant role, such as Peter. The book has few grammatical errors.
