In We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko, the story seems to be centered around a particular city in Voulhire. We take a look at the industrial city of Virko, which appears to be at the heart of the kingdom’s successes and advancements. Matthew Tysz puts us in the midst of it all as he captures the inner dealings from its rise to now, where its future looks quite different from when it was first established.

In a quest to give back to his adopted kingdom, Galen Bray’s adventures take him and his companions to Virko, the former home of his imbuer friend, in search of iron. But they arrive at a time when this city is undergoing extensive changes. Though they accomplish what they set to, a request from a dying man sets them on a different path from their initial purpose, which they set out to finish. This leaves us wondering if there was a higher purpose to them coming here and what will the result of their actions bear for this place.

A gloomier book than the first in the series, this book is rifled with evil and a sense of impending doom. It puts you in a somber mood, although that means credit should be given to the author’s writing style. One other thing I disliked about this book was that happenings that gave the impression of importance were cut short or not given the proper attention, whereas those that one would regard as minor, such as that of the party hosted by Lord Dragan, dragged on for longer than they should have.

An improvement from the previous book, this one has fewer descriptions that do not add to the plot of the story. True to its genre, it provides us with every bit of magic, but the author also manages to perfectly create a world where it co-exists with the laws of nature as we know them. Matthew’s tone provided more feelings for the reader, as he was able to portray every character’s present feelings. There is also enough action in this book to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Not suitable for all audiences, especially children and preteens. There is a bit of profanity, but the largest factor for this discretion is its vivid scenes of rape and demons feasting on people. I give it 2 out of 4 because, despite it all, it does not provide enough ups and downs to keep me interested for long.
