Review by itsrachna -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival un...
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an epic fantasy novel which starts with the story of Gallen Bray who finally gets an opportunity to escape from the war affected Land of Princes to a new foreign land. He is the son of a powerful ruler of a land where one's fate is "Death by sword, or slow starvation." The state of Voulhire is enjoying its Golden Age. Arrival of Gallen in Voulhire might bring some hidden twists to the plot.
The book talks about two worlds the Cosmos and the Caromentis. The country has a dark political history, excellent economic development but most grandly a shady connection with magical world. Eldus Alderman becomes the new lord of Hillport but he realizes that the evil still hovers over the castle. The character of Meldorath is described so explicitly that it provokes fear even while reading. The plot remains a mystery until the very end. I have always had a liking for fantasy and mystery books. This one completely satisfies my taste. The fear and courage travel hand in hand. Usually the Kings are only associated with bravery and perfection but the writer here has portrayed the characters with more reality. Even the lords are afraid and even the Kings can be imperfect. Saint Idus, the greatest king of all time who united Voulhire too had flaws and they are mentioned in the book.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars because I think the book is very slow paced and some more plot could have been added to it. But still each chapter had twists and it acts as a great stimulant to read the next ones. This is not an independent work. This one is just like an introductory part for rest of the series. However, the book doesn't fail in assuring you that many mind blowing revelations are waiting ahead.
What I liked the most about the book is that the writer has very neatly divided the scenes on basis of characters. The inclusion of witchcraft and magic never deteriorates your interest. The book has a map in the beginning. Mapping the places is a difficult job and I think the writer has worked a lot on it. You can quickly hop onto the map and see what place you are reading about thus making it a lot more easier to remember. To establish a whole new world and convince the readers about its existence is one of the most difficult task and I believe the writer is a master in it.
The ending isn't very intimidating. It lacks the knots and curiosity. The author has paid a keen interest towards details. The places, the castle, its people and everything is expressed fragment by fragment. Overall the book leaves you within conspiracies. Surely going to read the next parts too. There were minor spelling mistakes but those were not noteworthy. No obscenity found. The book is recommended for both young and old age groups. It will take you to a mysterious dreamland.
