I thoroughly enjoyed the book Project Tau by Jude Austin. I am thrilled to rate it 4 out of 4 stars. This story is extremely well written and edited. I found no typos and noticed only minor continuity errors, not bad enough to interrupt the story. The writing is easily understood but sophisticated (I only had to look up one word) allowing the reader to easily become and stay immersed in the story.

The tale begins like so many coming of age stories. The protagonist, Kalin Taylor, is new to college and sick of being unpopular. To improve his image he plans to join a fraternity. Of course, he must prove himself by completing an impossible task. He realizes that he will fail at this hazing stunt but, out of desperation, he decides to go through with it.

This is when it all goes wrong. His attempt to prove himself backfires completely when a corrupt organization manipulates him into cooperating with their evil schemes. Eventually Kalin loses himself and is forced to fight for basic human rights, freedom and even his survival. Thankfully he makes several allies that support, protect and care for him. Kalin and Project tau are in the same situation and band together to survive ultimately making them both better human beings. This traumatic period impacted not just him, but the lives of those around, forever.

I would loosely categorize this story as Science Fiction since it takes place in the future on an alien planet, however, that is essentially where the Sci-Fi theme ends. There is minimal futuristic technology and no foreign feeling aliens making it easier to connect with the characters. Several strong dark themes come into play in this story, including intimidation, revenge, torture, dehumanization, slavery, murder, and rape. These topics are seamlessly intertwined and do not feel forced or disruptive. This story also includes several instances of profanity and blasphemy. A character with strong religious beliefs is bullied by others repeatedly taking the lord’s name in vain on purpose.

Positive themes in this story include overcoming adversity, the value of life, perseverance, and justice. The protagonist’s father is quoted saying “you never know what you can do until you try.” Unfortunately, this was said in an attempt to get Kalin to change and engage in sports, but it is still applicable in his and everyone’s lives.

With the current Black Lives Matter movement, this story highlights some of what black Americans have suffered and still strive to overcome. It also addresses the challenge of keeping hope and never giving up in such horrible circumstances. Even the simplest of lessons in the story are very meaningful. Primarily, recognizing injustice and making every effort to make things right.

I highly recommend this book for most avid readers, sci fi enthusiasts and those not easily upset by strong dark themes. However, devout religious persons may be offended by the language and thus may want to avoid it. Personally, I am very excited to read the next installment in this series.
