We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz- This book started off very intriguing and had me completely hooked. I absolutely loved the descriptions of the different places, cities, buildings and lands. The detail in the architecture truly gives a spark to the imagination. The descriptions in this story remind me, somewhat, of a medieval time period with the language of a more modern time. It is definitely a fantasy world, yet so similar to our own.

There is implied sexual content, pedophilia, magic, and graphic depictions in this book. I do not recommend reading the book if these things make you uncomfortable. There is foul language in this book but I actually didn’t mind it personally as it fits the characters who speak it and just helps create the full picture of the characters themselves. This book definitely keeps surprising you with twists and turns not expected at all.

The story encompasses the journey of Galen, Eldus and his family, The King Wilhlem and the evil Meldorath as their lives entwine in a vicious, dark and mystical battle of good vs evil. The story begins as Galen, a gentle soul, takes refuge in a new land by traveling far from home to take over his uncle’s forge and learn the art of becoming a blacksmith.

We see Eldus and his family take on their new role as nobility in the evil Meldorath’s castle, in an effort to bring the people a semblance of peace and security. What secrets will Eldus uncover in the shadows of the castle? How long can King Wilhelm hide his secrets and lies? Is Meldorath truly dead or will the long feared terror show his face once again? There are many “twists in the tale” so to speak in this book. And it all comes together in the end to create a fantastical, thrilling and captivating tale that leave you wanting more.

I rate this book a 3 out of 4. I felt the book was well written and well edited. There were no errors that I noticed. There was a smattering of foul language throughout the book, among other adult themes, as I have already mentioned above. I would not recommend this book for children or young adults. Perhaps, older teens at best. This is definitely an adult tale but one that is truly enjoyable. The author did an exceptional job.
