Review by YJ9+ -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
The ambitious, the proud and the humble; brace yourselves! The adventure continues in the second book of the We Are Voulhire series of Matthew Tysz. We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko weaved the fate of Galen Bray to the spirit world. To help Magnum Caelum get its iron supply Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius traveled to Virko, a prosperous city run by capitalists. Our travelers found themselves in a whirlwind of political dilemma, past connections, and demonic activities. While Yamon Soul has let its guard down, hellfire broke loose in Virko. Unrequited love, passion, murder, and evil screamed from all corners of Virko. Our protagonist kept his word to Lord Hrelek and proved himself courageous however, with each of his step he gets closer to Meldorath neither of them aware of each other. Who shall Galen be to Meldorath? What awaits the indomitable Voulhire?
I was excited to read this book after finishing the first part. Galen is an amazing character he is wide eyed but brave, honorable, and empathetic to other people’s strife. His conquest to know more about his uncle is still at the back of his mind sadly he can’t get more answers as he wanted to. I was shocked about the young lord of Virko. At first, I found him charming but as the story went on his image developed and complemented the people connected to him such as his family, his old friends, and his accomplices. Still, the author kept the humor in Rowan’s dialogues and I liked it the most. I just wished that Galen had more involvement but I think this just makes me want to read more of this series waiting for what Galen will become. Demetrius mostly carried the momentum of the novel.
Just like before, Tysz didn’t fail to surprise his readers. This was proven to what happened in Yamon Soul. His accounts on the Eiodi lulled my awareness of what’s really happening and suddenly there was a turn of events. In a blink of an eye everything happened all at once magnifying the intensity of the ambition and intentions of each character. It is a very good book but I think the development of Galen is quite slow. There were no grammatical and typographical errors but there was light profanity in the text.
All in all it was a very good read! I recommend this to fans of medieval fantasy book genres. Young adults and adults who love the works of J.R.R. Tolkien may love this well written work. I give it three out of four stars because I liked the story very much but I think Galen wasn’t involved that much compared to the other characters in the book. Magic kept on chasing after him and I’d like to see him chase after it and own it.
