In Solaris Seethes, writer Janet McNulty immediately drops her readers into an explosive firefight and we can tell from page one that this is going to be a great adventure. Under these rains of destruction, we are introduced to our heroine, Rynah, who is leading an evacuation of the air craft under attack. She fires her laser gun as surely as she fires off commands to get as many people as she can to safety. I was hooked from page one, both on this girl and the story.

This is a story of a young woman Rynah. Now, this young lady finds out at the book’s start, that her fiancee, Klanor, has been betraying her for their entire relationship. This ugly man is actually leading a force against her and her team, planning to kill who he must and take what he wants. Rynah blasts her way off the burning ship, saving soldiers and civilians as she escapes. But, she must leave the planet-saving crystal she has been guarding behind. Flying in her grandfather’s AI ship Solaris, Rynah crafts her plan. She gathers 4 heroes from scattered times and space. Her new crew has members from ancient Rome, Viking times, modern day and the year 2099. With her new team transported onto Solaris, they take off on the mission to gather the 6 scattered crystals, encrypted data cores, and save Rynah’s world.

My favorite aspect of this book, hands down, is Rynah. McNulty has created a wonderfully deep and multi-layered heroine. She gave this young woman the technical skills to be a superhero and the courage to use those talents. This gal is on the level of Star Wars’ Rey and Alien’s Ripley, she is that good. And what a world the writer has crafted for us. Fans of series like Firefly will flock to this book, drawn by this imaginative world among the heavens.

As with any science-fiction or fantasy book, the reader has to engage in some big suspensions of disbelief. In this Solaris book, my biggest hurdle with that was not man-eating plants, but a team of humans from different times beamed together on a ship and barely blinking. A Viking seems to take being on a spaceship in stride. I wished there would have been a little more time to watch them all process this impossible situation. Also, after the midpoint of the book, the author introduced a slate of new characters. This addition is a bit confusing, but as the writer is playing the long game establishing a series, I suspect we’ll learn more as we go along. There are no clear solutions at the end of a first book, but that’s also to be expected.

The editing of the book deserves acknowledgement. It’s a challenging task to juggle worlds and times and to keep the voices and prose clear. But, the text remains clear and crisp throughout and the story clips along at a brisk pace. And this is a compelling book, so it’s a blazing fast read.

McNulty has the beginnings of a great series on her hands. This is a 4 out of 4 star book with galaxies full of imagination and a solid plot foundation to carry the story out for many books to come. I will am surely looking forward to her next installment.
