Review by david isaji -- We are Voulhire: The Flesh of t...
Voulhire had been inhibited by the Empire of lullabies. His ships had been stationed in the skies of the kingdom, and his forces were roaming the streets. With the fate of the kingdom at stake, Galen has to be smart and play real-life chess. The only chance of saving Voulhire was from seeking the help of some old enemies. In this thrilling fantasy that takes us to Caromentis and back, how do things unfold?
We are Voulhire: The Flesh of the Mind is the sixth installment of the enrapturing We are Voulhire series that is written by Matthew Tysz.
This book grabbed me and drew me in quickly and completely. I love it when I can settle down and knock out all the details of the story. Reminiscing the specifics like the story arcs, the first and last names of the characters, and relaying the “grand scheme” kind of stuff without having to go back and look up for any of those details along the way. It means that the novelist has done something special. That is, without a doubt, the case here. He was able to write the story that was within his mind out onto the page and into my head in such a manner that a big chunk of it stuck. In my opinion, this is the job description of an excellent writer.
The prose is graceful and complete. Whenever the prose is beautiful, I always end up getting distracted from paying attention to the important parts of the book—the characters and their storylines—that was not the case here. The reading experience was more enjoyable because of it. I find this a rare talent to have. Although, having read all the previous installments in this series, this is somewhat less surprising.
The characters are well-wrought and well-defined. The story is delivered from points of view of different characters. I love this style of story delivery because it offers an in-depth look into the character’s behaviors and traits. The protagonist is always determined to do what is right for the kingdom and its people; I find that adoring.
There is nothing I did not like about this novel. I came across a few grammatical errors while reading it, but they did not hinder the comprehensive flow of the book. With that in mind, I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I can’t wait to read the seventh installment of this series. I recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fantasy. It contains graphical scenes and use of profane language, hence it is not commendable to young readers.
