We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a book under the genre of science fiction and fantasy, and it is the first in a series of nine. The book centers on the kingdom of Voulhire and various things that revolve around politics, magic, conspiracies, and faith are bound to occur in this kingdom.

Interestingly, Voulhire is made up of different cities which include Magnum Caelum, Hillport, Virgo, Yamon Soul, and Soulhire. These cities are known for unique things. Soulhire’s reputation for fierce politics, high economic standing, and great dancing culture precedes it. Virgo has steam engines, and it is described as a dark but prosperous city. Hillport is known for its poverty, while Yamon Soul is seen as a holy land.

The main character in this book is Galen Bray. Galen is discovered by his uncle after so many years, and he is made the heir to his properties. He then seeks to live a peaceful life in this newfound home of his in Magnum Caelum and to uphold the legacy of his uncle by being a blacksmith. Other prominent characters in this book are predominantly male, and they are Lord Eldus, King Wilhem, Rowan, and Meldorath. Meldorath claims to be falsely accused by the King. However, this assertion of his remained unconfirmed throughout the book. Hopefully, this will be answered in any of the books in the subsequent series.

Being a book that has multiple elements and occurrences, a lot of themes are explored in this book and some of them relate to war, magic, pedophiles, science, fanaticism, and many more.

A couple of profane words are present in this book, and they mostly came from the end of Rowan. On the other hand, from my careful perusal of this book, I did not come across any erotic scene.

What I loved about the book is the way the writer introduced some cities in Voulhire; I found it to be entertaining and superb. Also, I appreciated the style of writing of Matthew Tysz as it made the book to be reasonably engaging.

Thankfully, my reading was not disrupted at any point on the grounds of errors, for it is a professionally edited book. Conversely, I disliked the book for a number of reasons. I found it difficult to connect with most of the characters, and I found the book to be a tad confusing. For these reasons, I feel justified in giving this book a rating of three out of four stars.

Lovers of science fiction and fantasy novels will be well receptive to this book, and it will be appreciated by them. I, therefore, strongly recommend it to them.

I read this book a while back and was fascinated by the dancing culture, which even the Eiodi partook in. Thank you for your comprehensive review. 💫
