"We are the Voulhire: The Ascension of Akistry" by Matthew Tysz is the fifth novel in the 'We are Voulhire' series. Like its predecessors, this sequel promises to take you on a ride of enchanted cities, court politics and deep dark secrets that are most likely to capture the hearts of readers.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the protagonist, Galen Bray reminisces of the unnatural calm that has seemed to descend over the city of Voulhire. The people still work day and night to establish Voulhire as a great city that takes its pride in religion and unprecedented technology. Soon enough, Galen is visited by the defeated Emperor of Lullabies in his dream and through cryptic messages leaves him in no doubt that the glorious city of Voulhire is heading towards a doom.

The church remains in the clutches of the immortal wizard, Meldorath of the throne of Eiodi. In his search for the gateway of Caromentis, he sees over the construction of a mystical equipment that will help him reach his goal.

King Nartik, on the other hand grows suspicious of Chancellor Renard, a formidable wizard whose flick of a wand obliterates enemies in a flash, and tries to keep the fearsome Commander Rhea Varro close to him. His pursuit of the Cosmites leads him into an unfavourable deal with the devil.

The sequel sees the three friends- Galen, Demetrius and Rowan undertake a journey through the mythical cities, dark recesses, the jungle of Dire Vine and end their passage in the highly spiritual city of Yamon Soul: holding on to the hope that at the end of it all, they will come across a sage of times yonder. But will it be worth all the dreams and hope of lost glory and impending doom?

The book has been well written in its own way. Although it might appeal to readers who follow the fantasy genre, it is mostly a flat book that garners no emotion. One realises that it gets a bit monotonous with its superfluous characters who seem more invested in contemplating. Descriptive chapters help take the narrative forward and is just enough to help the readers create a mental image. The map at the beginning of the novel helps too.

The book contains no erotic content neither does it use any profanities. Except a few syntax errors the work has been well edited. I give the book 2 out of 4 stars. Although a fairly good book, it can improve.
