Review by Leandra81 -- Shadow Eclipse Voyage by E. M. Gale
Shadow Eclipse: Voyage is categorized as an epic space opera but reads similarly to urban fantasy or YA. If you are a reader who enjoys these genres, then give this book a try. It merges both in a fascinating, attention-grabbing, and comical way. You will be transported to a world with plenty of aliens, pirates, vampires, Yakuza, and space-aged planets, almost like a modern version of Star Wars.
The main character Florentina Clarke is a Ph.D. student. She enjoys her life on a fly-by-night basis, hastily jumping from one casual sexual encounter to the next. The morning after her latest one-night stand, Clarke feels unsettled. She tries to piece together the events from the previous night but becomes disorientated. She harbors a deep feeling that from now, on her life will change forever.
Afterward, Clarke joins up with her friends, one of whom is very eager to pull them all into an experiment that ends disastrously wrong. This experiment sets in motion an adventure of grand proportions. Clarke unexpectedly becomes their group leader and has to get herself and her friends out of various problematic situations, while hiding her biggest secret yet.
The story follows the perspective of Florentina Clarke. Even though the book was lengthy, the storyline was exciting and captured your attention from the first chapter. The ending was relatively predictable. The pace and how the story was structured could have picked up in certain places. There weren't any explicit sex scenes in the book. But for the most part, a substantial number of casual encounters.
Author E. M. Gale knows how to accurately capture the modern readers' continual attention with her fantastic description of world-building and vivid imagination. The clever plot was highly engaging, thoroughly entertaining, and very funny. The author must have drawn her inspiration for this story from her scientific background.
The author did not appear to have had the book professionally edited. However, as an open-minded reader, I found nothing substantial enough to distract me from the narrative. The profanity throughout the book was moderate, but it flowed with the events that were taking place and added the humor of the story. The novel was enjoyable, with its unique and refreshing approach regardless of any errors my overall rating will be 3 out of 4 stars. I will be recommending this book to my family and friends and look forward to the next installment of the series.
