Review by Mary1214 -- Masters and Bastards
Masters and Bastards by Christopher J. Penington is a roller-coaster of a ride that takes the reader to an unbelievable realm, where life on earth could be no more different than it is. The caste system has taken over society and divides the community more than ever. The book follows the journey of Andreas Marset, a lowly legionary in the Iberian army, but sure enough, with a quick wit, he makes his way into the limelight, when he excels in his exams. Soon enough, Andreas is caught in a trap into becoming the father of the emperor's illegitimate grandchild. In an intergalactic battle, the reader is left on their toes every step of the way.
The book takes the reader to an unknown dimension where they go deep into the dark side of the world of galactic politics consisting of greed and selfishness. The novel consists of is full of mystery and action with a sprinkle of romance. I truly think this is a book that everyone can find a liking to.
Andreas is a rather complicated character despite still being a teenager he appears to be mentally much more mature. His telepathic ability makes him a threat to the opposition in war but also leaves him vulnerable for the emperor to exploit for power. The character development in the book is truly amazing. The author really encapsulated the mystery element by writing the book in Andreas’ point of view because it leaves the reader wondering about the origin of his powers and Andreas himself.
What I liked most about the book was, the character development of the main protagonist Andreas, I thought it was rather realistic how he mentally progressed regarding his military experiences. I liked this because as a reader you can connect with some of their emotions, from happiness to sadness. This deepens the bond between characters and readers. What I disliked most about the book were the long political discussions that were dragged out sometimes making it can be hard to bear at times.
I give this book 3 out of 4 stars because there was nothing that really stood out for me when compared to other Sci-fi books. The plot manages to hook the reader with turns in the plot, the choice of perspective was well thought out and was all-rounder a fair book as well as being well-edited. Nonetheless, the chemistry in the romance aspect could use some refining. Nonetheless, I would recommend this to fantasy book lovers. There is the use of strong languages and with some sexual scenes, so I wouldn't recommend to sensitive readers.
