Moon Magic by Charli Elizabeth is a sci-fi fantasy novel that follows Lennox Hess, a were-panther. While most weres turn into wolves at the full moon, Lennox transforms into a panther, thus labeling her as an outsider and pariah. Luckily for her, the Beta wolf of the pack, Graham, loved and protected Lennox throughout her childhood. Having another pair of eyes and ears was useful because her father, the Alpha, used every opportunity to try to kill her.

The story begins twelve years after Lennox fled the pack, leaving Graham behind. She leads a semi-normal life, acting as a part-time bartender and private investigator. But the solitary life she fought for is quickly upturned when rogue wolves attack Lennox, and her father calls her back to the pack to utilize her assassin skills. Lennox must navigate conflicting feelings while finding a way to survive a dangerous and mysterious situation.

I was torn between giving Moon Magic a 2 or 3. Ultimately, I decided that 3 out of 4 stars was more appropriate because I genuinely enjoyed the book. I was almost immediately invested in the main character, Lennox, and intrigued by her past. Elizabeth created a truly magical and mysterious story. However, the reason I considered giving the book a 2 was because of the frequent grammatical mistakes. The writing was decent, but I struggled to stay in the fantasy world because confusing grammar continuously distracted me. More than once there was a strange change in verb tense or point of view in the middle of a sentence. It’s disappointing to see such minor errors detracting from such an interesting story, especially because Moon Magic credited editor S.J. Night, so there was the opportunity to fix mistakes. I hope the sequel will be much more carefully edited.

As much as I disliked the many superficial mistakes, I didn’t dislike any part of the story. Moon Magic was well thought out, and characters were given complex backstories and personalities. Some of my favorite parts were moments when the main character, Lennox, was imperfect. Too often in fiction characters are not given enough flaws, or are given flaws that double as strengths. However, Elizabeth created a highly flawed character and therefore relatable. I could easily see myself in Lennox’s stubbornness and hot temper.

Although the love triangle was predictable, I found myself enjoying the tension and conflicting emotions. Many fictional books contain love triangles, and it can quickly become cliché and boring. However, I didn’t find this love triangle boring at all. The fantastical elements brought a new layer to the dynamic, and I found the analysis of the nature of cats and wolves interesting. Of course, the various steamy scenes didn’t hurt my interest in the love triangle (wink). Elizabeth created a nice balance between sexual tension, emotional conflict, and physical conflict. There wasn’t a moment where I was bored, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

This novel seems to have some intriguing elements, though romance is not my thing. I could consider it after another round of proofreading. Thank you for your terrific review!

I really love this idea. I think werecats don't make much of an appearance in a lot of popular fiction. So, it's really nice to see this author has come up with an exciting unique plot! The protagonist sounds really likable as well.

Werewolves don't interest me, and grammatical errors drive me nuts! Two strikes against the book. But you did a wonderful job of justifying your rating. Thank you.
