Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty, the first book in the Solaris Saga, is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel that keeps you engaged until the end and makes you want to have the remainder of the series right away. The story focuses on Rynah, a young, but strong-headed, woman, as she goes on a quest to save her home planet, Lanyr. Once the crystal that maintains Lanyr’s magnetic fields is stolen, Rynah, along with Solaris and four humans, must find the other crystals in an attempt to preserve the universe.

After Rynah narrowly avoids her planet’s destruction, she discovers an old ship that her grandfather built/owned. However, Solaris is not just any old ship, she is a sassy, artificially intelligent being that Rynah’s grandfather programmed into the ship. With Solaris by her side, Rynah learns that the legends of the crystals are more than just legends and that she must find them before it is too late, as the man who stole Lanyr’s crystals, Klanor, is after the others as well. Legend speaks of four individuals who will assist Rynah on her quest: a warrior, a philosopher, an inventor, and a lover. Rynah must train these unlikely heroes from the past with the technology of the present, and they must learn quickly, as Klanor is one step ahead of them.

My favorite thing about this book is that McNulty managed to write it in such a way that makes it relatable. The characters’ traits and development are similar to what many people would face in real life. This is especially true for Brie, the “lover” from the year 2014, who often allows her fear and insecurity to stand in the way of her success, and unfortunately, the group’s as well. Brie’s struggle with her fear is perhaps the most infuriating trait of the group, but it is also the most relatable. Any person who was pulled away from their life and thrown into the middle of an intergalactic quest would probably act the same way.

The thing I liked the least about this book was that at the beginning of the book, the premise was slightly similar to that of the Soul Gems (otherwise known as the Infinity Stones) from the Marvel Comics. However, upon further reading of the book, I realized that while the premise was similar, the story itself was very different, and in my opinion, more captivating. McNulty did a phenomenal job of sucking the reader into the world of Solaris and keeping them there.

I rate Solaris Seethes by Janet McNulty 4 out of 4 stars. I do not typically enjoy Sci-Fi books, so trust me when I say that this book is amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to curl up with. However, I will say, that there are some brief, indirect references to some things that may be unsettling to some (murder, rape, prostitution…etc.), but if you can get past this, then this book is for you.
