Review by Kerina33 -- The Soulmate Prophecy - Book One -...
This is a review of The Soulmate Prophecy by Yasmina Hague. I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars.
The Soulmate Prophecy is a journey through time and landscape following three story lines at once (that we assume will converge at some point). Lovelin Kahn is an author who is experiencing writer's block and longs for a vacation to stir her creativity. She begins having dreams about a man she had only seen in her head and begins to think he might be something more than a hallucination. Dr. Kaelyn Stonebridge is the world's top geneticist, living and working in a top secret underground research colony. As his work becomes more stressful, he too longs for a vacation and his mind begins sending him visions of a beautiful woman. In a third setting, we see the daily life of Maya, an Egyptian girl living nearly 2400 years ago. We follow her through her arranged marriage and the subsequent birth of her unusual children.
The story moves through these three lives and times, alluding to a connection, but never quite connecting them. We see the struggles of the writer and her dream journeys to a facility she's never heard of. We see the stressful life of the doctor and his struggle to keep it together. We see the life of the simple girl, changed forever by her children. What we don't see, is how these stories come together. We can make assumptions, but nothing is ever truly explained.
I enjoyed the author's ability to take us through three different settings and create them all vividly. The main characters were developed fully, helping the reader to feel a connection to them. Loopy was precious and is the one character that would make me want to keep reading this series. Several minor characters, however, were mentioned and then never seen again. I found that confusing and cumbersome to the story.
This is NOT a stand alone book. At the end, none of the story lines converged in any tangible way or were resolved in any fashion. There were sub-plots that were mentioned and then never revisited. It felt as if the author simply grew tired of writing and stopped. My least favorite part of the book, however, was the strange incestuous relationship that was presented and never explained. I found it disturbing.
This book should appeal to mature audiences who do not mind profanity or unconventional relationships. I would recommend it to fans of paranormal or futuristic fantasy, who do not mind a story that does not resolve. I would not recommend it for children or teens, as the language is profane and themes such as incest and extramarital affairs are presented in detail. There are erotic scenes that would not be appropriate for younger readers.
I give this book only 2 stars out of 4 because of the lack of resolution and the extremely poor editing. There were at least 10 spelling/grammatical errors before I reached page 70. For example, "...I changed into black Nike running plants..." and "...my feet...seems to be nailed to the ground." So many errors made reading this book an effort.
