The Global Reconstruction Project by S. Cotton details the takeover of the world by a select group of talented people. Frank is the leader of the operation and uses his power to recruit key players in his plan for world domination. His goal is to unite the world under one government in which he holds all the power. He believes that this is the only way to completely reconstruct the world and leave the current mess behind. To get there, however, he needs to implement a series of complex events that will leave the entire world vulnerable.

These events include administering an extremely contagious virus that will spread around the world, attacking government officials, shutting down power grids across the United States, planting spies in important circles, and framing other countries for nuclear attacks. While all these events are happening, the group of people involved in the global reconstruction project, also known as the cabal, are hidden away on a private island. There they are safe from possible retribution if they are discovered to have a hand in any of these events.

The novel includes a variety of characters that are key players in the operation. These characters are people with backgrounds ranging from finance, technology, government, and military operations to epidemiology, genetics, and environmental science. Each person has been carefully selected by Frank based on their skills and interest in the project. Due to the amount of characters, I finished the book feeling like I never really got to know any of them. I knew only a little bit about most of them and virtually nothing about others. While I understand that the author may have wanted to focus on the action and plotline, I felt that the novel would have been much more enjoyable had we taken the time to get to know the characters better. There is a lack of character development that ultimately left the book feeling a bit flat.

The style that the story is told in is often difficult to follow. One moment we’re reading about two characters having a romantic dinner on the beach and the next part we’re reading what feels like a news article. Maybe it’s because the storyline is a bit too realistic during current times, but I often felt as though I had stopped reading a novel and instead picked up a history book or newspaper article. The switch between writing styles often felt a bit jarring. There were also quite a few instances where jargon is used that the average reader will not be familiar with. I think the author could have gotten the point across without making it feel so much like a medical or military briefing.

I am rating this book a 2 out of 4 stars. For me, the plot often dragged, the characters felt flat, and the writing style was not my cup of tea. There are also quite a few errors throughout the novel. However, there may be some out there who will enjoy this story with its many details. I would suggest this book to those who enjoy dystopian novels and historical fiction. I would not recommend it to those who want a fast-paced plot or character development.

I wonder if Frank succeeds in taking over the world. I am surprised the author does not make the plot fast-paced as I think it should be. I think a few adjustments to the pace of the plot would make this book a good one to read. Thanks for this concise review.

I wondered that too. And yes, I agree that if it was a little more fast-paced it would have been much more enjoyable!

I like the idea of taking over the world for the greater good and how it leads to some great, ruthless characters. Sounds like this one has a few too many though, and if it's tough/jarring to read then I'll pass. Thanks for your review!

The timing for a novel that includes a very contagious virus can be perfect or totally off, depending on a very personal point of view. Regardless, it seems in need of an editor to help the author in its development and proofreading. Thank you for your honest review!

This sounds like an interesting idea, especially in the time we are currently living in.

Too bad there was a lot of poor execution. Good review!

For a book plotted around world take over, I expected a fast-paced, thrilling, and interesting content. I'll pass. Thanks for the review.

Very compelling cover, immediately drew me in. It's sad about character development, but I think I'd still like to read this.

Great review.

This story has many eerie similarities with current events. While the concept is interesting (to say the least), clearly some improvements need to be made regarding character development, pacing, and style.

Thank you for your honest review.

Well I don't generally agree with the idea of this book. Inflicting the world with a contagious disease just to make it vulnerable so they could take over. Isn't that a bit selfish? However, I like your review
