Official Review: Truth Come to Light by Taryn Feldmann
Truth Come to Light by Taryn Feldmann is a thriller novel in which a couple of archaeologists risk their lives to uncover the truth about the connection between the human race and the alien race. Paige is a university teacher, who also suffers from bipolar disorder, lost her mother and father to a tragic accident. After some encouragement from her best-friend Rose, she gathers a team of trusted associates to discover the truth about the Mayan civilization. As a result, she finds herself being followed by government officials and her nemesis Agent Jones. After being admitted to the psychiatric ward, she encounters Lauren, who had succumbed to the same fate. Both of the women discovered a black substance, which contained worms with unknown properties. Will Caleb save the girls? Will the weapon fall into the hands of the government? Will Paige and Lauren recognize the truth? Will Agent Jones kill them all?
I believe there are four characteristics of an influential novel. The first is the plot and its plausibility. The second is the characters and how realistic they are. The third is the strength of the climax. The fourth thing is the style of narrative and the language employed. The author failed to provide enough strength to these pillars.
The idea of the novel was commendable. The author, being an archaeologist herself, was able to provide proper information about the expeditions. Her theories about the Mayan Civilization and the Ant People were very much believable, but the plot was inherently weak. The thrill was non-existent, and everything was provided to the characters on a silver plate. Everything they did was achieved in less than a page, and suspense kept diminishing throughout the novel.
Characters were the weakest link of the novel. They were bland, with no uniqueness or development. If the names are removed from the book, the narrative will appear to have no more than two characters. The villain was skilled to slaughter and restrain everyone she wanted, but that is the solitary thing we acquired about her. There were no other dialogues that could have shown more about her character. Paul’s relation with Kiera and Lauren was almost the same and pointless. Characters fell in love within a week, got married in the next and then got divorced just as quickly. In simpler words, there was no depth in the characters and offered the reader no reason to root for them.
The writing style was very immature and full of errors, which shows that it was not edited professionally. The imagery was weak, and expressions were poorly laid out. The action scenes were tremendously animated and below par. More than often, there were phrases instead of proper sentences. The author wrote two pages for a simple airplane ride that Lauren took but finished Caleb’s three day’s hard trek in less than a paragraph.
There is a lot of potential in the plot, and with another round of editing and rewriting the idea can be exploited with justice. With a heavy heart, I rate this book 1 out of 4 stars. Archaeology geeks and people who believe in the alien race will enjoy this book. The book is not recommended for children due to the mention of explicit scenes.
