Masters and Bastards, by Christopher J. Penington, is a sci-fi novel placed in a futuristic world where there has been a division between two races: the Iberians and the Arpathians. The Iberians are considered to be the superior race, which is why they are the ones in control of the government and all the important positions in the army, while the Arpathians are considered to be inferior and they don’t even have the right to vote.

This book tells us the story of Andreas Marset, a young Arpathian soldier with extraordinary abilities. Without knowing about the length of his powers and without having any idea of the plans that the Emperor had for him, Marset was summoned all of a sudden to the Imperium, a place where Arpathians rarely set foot. That was only the beginning of an extensive journey full of unexpected adventures, battles, races for power and love.

I absolutely adored this book. At first it may appear to be quite long, since it has 445 pages, however it is so well written that reading it isn’t tedious or tiring at all. Whenever I was going through the pages, I lost track of time and I could picture every scene perfectly, an effect hard to achieve. The characters are strong and each one has a unique personality, every battle is perfectly described, the plot is well-structured and every chapter is thrilling. I couldn’t stop reading and I was always wondering what would come next.

The only thing I didn’t like is that at times, the story seemed rushed, nonetheless this is a minor detail and it doesn’t affect the storyline nor the narrative, I believe this detail is a consequence of me not wanting the book to end.

The book is professionally edited, however it still presents a few orthographic slips. It is also worth noting that it’s not designed for young children due to the fact that, even if not explicit, it has sexual content. Nevertheless, it is perfect for young adults and adults.

Masters and Bastards has a little bit of everything, which is why everyone can enjoy it, even if you are not a fan of science fiction. This novel is peerless, if you are looking for something to read, this is a magnificent option and you won’t regret it. I would absolutely recommend it and I definitely rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
