“They say the end of the world began when the president of the United States shot himself on national television.” What would the world look like after the apocalypse? Maybe more important, how would it feel? What do you do if you survive? How does a person pick up the pieces and move on? Or maybe you never really do, you just continue to exist.

The Turn by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a developing series of a post apocalyptic world. This series will consist of 5 novels in total. Written from different characters' viewpoints, they refer to “the turn” as when the world changed. Discover Scholar, Ashley and a stranger with an introduction to Cattleprod later on. The stranger is a mysterious character, where as Ashley, Scholar and Cattleprod are well defined and the reader gets a chance to really get to know them. See brief glimpses into the lives they had before the turn happened and how they had to adapt and change to survive in this bleak and hopeless world.

In the beginning, it may seem drawn out but you undoubtedly get a chance to know the characters. This is intentional as Matthew Tysz is laying the foundation of what I anticipate will be a thrilling series. I found this shows promise because once you get a good grasp on these characters and how they navigate this changed and downright bizarre world, the momentum absolutely picks up. If Matthew Tysz's other novels are anything to go by, this series will be difficult to put down as well.

What I liked most is the manner in which this story is presented, the way the human world is destroyed stays secret to the reader until later in the story. It really kept such a mystery surrounding it. So much darkness, suffering and misery hangs like a heavy cloak throughout the novel.

My rating is 3 out of 4 only because it should have another round of editing, without these errors it would have easily gotten at 4 out of 4 rating as there’s nothing I didn't enjoy about it. The Turn would appeal to anyone who enjoys an in-depth and complex look at raw human survival in the aftermath of an apocalypse.

This is not for people who are skirmish with foul language, acts of violence or slavery. If you’re looking for something to snuggle up with and make you feel better, keep going as this book is wrapped in tragedy, hardships and violence.
