THE ORB
The Orb by Tara Basi talks about a society set up in an age of advanced technology. The society is made up of subdivided groups that include the pilgrims, ungodly and AIs. This society has been at war twice and there is a possibility of another war. The two key economic players in this society are against each other. Orb industries believe that the church wants to attack the ungodly of London and they intend to damage the church before they can attack. Orb industries intend to use the professor Simmons technology to bring back The Trump in order to confirm the divinity of the orb, reveal the church's corruption and deny them. The church sends zip in search of professor Simmons recording in order to bring her back for her to say that orb industries killed her.
The church releases Beta a cyber weapon in their attempt to reanimate Simmons. The cyber weapon takes over church troopers and tells the church to warn orb industries of a catastrophic orb event. Industries take Simmons record from the church to start her reanimation and Alpha, another cyber weapon, takes over orb industries. Zara and Simmons had agreed to go against orb industries.
The Orb has been set up in a time of technology that gives its readers a sense of the future as described by Tara Basi. The events, scenes, and characters are well developed with a lot of detail. The use of vivid description creates a picture of the event taking place and the area the event is set in. Profanity is effectively used in The Orb [page 23] to express the agitation of characters. This society like any other has different points of view and the two main economic players don’t like each other’s points of view which pushes them against each other.
I like how Tara Basi gives flow to ideas. The way the roles of various characters are developed from their previous lifetimes to their present-day contribution to the story is well done. The role of the book's characters to preserve peace in their society is well developed and their contribution is easily noted by the reader. The manipulation of characters to fit their intended purpose in the story is amazing. As a reader, you are kept in suspense of how each character fits into the story’s end until the last moment when Tara Basi reveals it and you are like “wow.”
I would give this book a 3 out of 4 ratings because it is captivating and fits the genre. I also like the flow of events in the book and how each character’s life fits into the others. I would recommend this book to people who like to explore as The Orb takes you to a different world and time. Apart from the typo on page 384, the book is well-edited.
