I'll start off with how I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. I couldn't find any errors so it seems to be professionally edited very well. The story was very descriptive with great details and easily flowed together. I found it to be mysterious and exciting at times, I'm just not sure I'll be reading the other books in this series because I didn't care for the main character too much. Though there were many other characters I really enjoyed.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an alluring tale about a young man named Galen. Galen's homeland has been torn apart by Princes at war with eachother while Voulhire is a promising kingdom living in it's "Golden Age". A great uncle who Galen's never met passed away there leaving him a house and forge. He jumps at this opportunity to better his life so he immediately moves to this new and exciting land hoping to be able to make something of himself as a new blacksmith. Voulhire seems to be as every bit beautiful, vast, and rich as the stories; but with old enemies plotting in the dark and many mysteries left unsolved... Will Galen find Voulhire really to be as better off as it seems?
I would recommend this book to an audience of young adults and up. Though there are no erotic scenes, there's plenty of sexual refrences and profanity. Anyone who enjoys fantasy realms full of magic and adventure should be able to enjoy this book though. Especially if they enjoy great battles and a little war.
The only thing I disliked about this book was that it seems to focus on others more. Galen is the main character yet I felt like I saw very little of him. I also found I couldn't relate to him that much. I think seeing a chapter or two of his life right before discovering his inheritance would've been more interesting. I ended up liking the other characters more and wishing one of them, like the King for example, was the main character instead.
What I liked the most though was how the author tied magic and fighting together with dancing. One of my favorite parts was when a Lord's castle is stormed by terrorists. How he described them all raiding the castle while dancing to their war beat was very interesting to try and imagine. I also really liked how it switched to other people's perspectives, reveling what they were thinking and what else was happening around the kingdom. Overall I did enjoy this book even though I said I wouldn't finish the series and I'd recommend it to anyone I know that enjoys the fantasy/sci-fi genre.
