The Orb by Tara Basi was an interesting book and I give it a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I am really happy to say that the book was edited well.

The book is about the orb, an alien artifact, that appeared over London. The silence of this artifact led to two global wars that left behind a scorched earth, economic meltdown, and a new Dark Age. London is the only city that has any kind of "normal" living circumstances because of the orb hanging over it. The rest of the world seems to be in tatters. The two main "government" players, in keeping the world in "normalcy", are Orb Industries and Pilgrims of the Church. The Pilgrims are actually worshiping the orb as a god.

The Orb is also about Peter, a computer whiz, who is desperately trying to find out who killed his daughter and why, although it is said that she actually committed suicide by hiring the killer herself. Peter contacts Zip, a private investigator, to help him discover what the real facts are. The story develops from there and we meet a bunch of different people. The hidden secrets take the story line in different directions and then converges into the truth at the end. What a surprising end. I can definitely say that I was not expecting that at all.

I did not like Zip in the beginning of the book, but she grew on me. Poor Peter however, supposed computer expert, was living with tunnel vision - which can probably be expected - but he was sometimes acting so stupid that I could gladly have given him a few shakes.

What I did not like about The Orb is that it does not even take into consideration that life is also gray and not just black and white. What happened then to all the other people on earth who are there to try and make it a better place for generations to follow. Why are there nobody that even tries to get the world out of the Dark Age? They do not exist in this book. I am sure that not all earthlings are as gullible as we are made out to be in The Orb as people mostly try to better themselves, their lives and general living circumstances.

The Orb by Tara Basi is easy to read. I can recommend this book if you enjoy science fiction with a mystery to solve thrown in. It may, however, not be liked by everyone equally.
