In a country where lands were divided to prevent four brothers from destroying their fathers work, the reader accompanies multiple different men on their travels in this strange would. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a complex story with many different main characters that are fighting between good and evil in a multidimensional world. Which power will prevail? Does good always conquer all or will evil win this war?
As the opening book in a new series, Tysz creates a story and builds the characters to tell a tale beyond the couple of hundred pages that this one tells. In this novel, Tysz throws the reader into the lives of some complex men. You travel through very different hardships that each character is put up against. Characters are thrown into new cities that have different cultures, new positions in their communities, and new battles that test their strength. Between work ethic, honor, and a little bit of magic, the reader begins their journey in Voulhire.
Overall, I thought this was a great fantasy novel that didn't dive too far into the fantasy world that would cause nonfantasy readers to simply ignore it. Tysz did a great job of incorporating new ideas and an interesting storyline that you don't see in every fantasy book. The fact that this is not your average fantasy book is what I enjoyed most. I also thought that he built all of the characters very well. From the multitude of main characters to the smaller roles, they are all thoroughly thought about and built up in their own way. I enjoyed how each character had their own story that was aside from the main story but they were all explained and told by themselves. Although I enjoyed this aspect it is also one of the main things I disliked about his story. It is very difficult to see where some of their stories intertwine with the overall plot. While there we not much about this book that I did not like, the one thing did seem a major one to me.
While I believe that this is a great book I do not think it is a perfect book. I rated Tysz's novel a 3 out of 4 stars for a couple of different reasons. I did not give it a 4 star due to the fact that it is a very slow and difficult story to follow in the first portion of the book. The beginning bounces around a lot and does not create a single combined story for the better part of the first half. I did not rate it any lower though because there are hardly any errors and the story is fantastic once the reader can connect all of the dots.
Lastly, I feel that this book would appeal to an array of readers. In its description, it is stated that this novel is for teens and up which I agree with but I also think that some of the content and terminology used is not appropriate for teen readers. For example, there is a discussion of pedophilia along with complex words that require a strong reader or dictionary. There is also a reference to rape and explicit language. So while teens may enjoy this book I believe they should be advised on the topics that will arise throughout. I do not believe a reader that has a dislike and a closed mind for fantasy would enjoy this but a reader that is willing to take their time will thoroughly enjoy We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz.
