The Engine Woman’s Light is a fantastic historical science fiction novel with great attention to detail, phenomenal plot, and definitely keeps the reader wanting more. Growing up in Southern California, and that being the setting, really made this book one I hold dear to my heart. Laurel Anne Hill really worked her magic on this one.

Laurel Anne Hill paints a majestic desert scene throughout the book, so much so that the reader can invision enduring squelching heat of the sun in the Mojave Desert. Characters, both in life and death, are so perfectly described that the reader could easily see them in their mind's eye. Could you imagine riding a horse possessed by a dead relative through the desert on an adventure? You will, after reading this novel.

The main character, Juanita, embarks on a mission entrusted to her by her ancestors. While on this journey to save the lives of hundreds of people, she finds herself on a journey of self discovery. She learns of the pain of loss and the strength it takes not to move on, but to move forward with her life. She questions her ancestors, but never loses faith and continues on with the mission is set before her. With her and ancestors and living allies on her side, Juanita realizes anything is possible.

While this book takes us along on Juanita’s journey, it also tells a story of love and devotion. After thinking the love of her life is dead and angry with her, Juanita learns to love another. One with a secret that Juanita will stop at nothing to figure out. Now she must choose between a man she loves but thought to be dead or the man that she has grown to love along the way. How could she ever choose?

As a reader I stayed on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. The characters and storyline had me absolutely captivated. It felt as if I were Juanita going on this grand adventure. I laughed when she laughed. I cried when she cried. I hurt when she hurt. That takes so much skill as a writer to develop that much descriptive emotion in a book, but Laurel Anne Hill accomplished this.

I truly hope that Laurel Anne Hill will write more about Juanita in the future. I didn’t want this book to end! All in all, this book gets 4 out of 4 stars from me. The Engine Woman’s Light is at the top of my recommendation list for anyone looking for an all around great book. Happy reading!
