We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel about Galen Bray, a young man that leaves his war-torn homeland and moves to Voulhire where he takes over his late uncle's blacksmithing business. After arriving in Voulhire, he meets Rowan, his uncle's executor, who was told to look out for Galen until he got used to this new land.
While Galen and Rowan are busy learning to blacksmith, Eldus is starting his new role as Lord of Hillport. He is a kind and caring lord who wants the best for his people. He knows that they have been hurt previously by Lord Orlin who is rumored to have abused children. Lord Meldorath came next after Orlin died. Meldorath had magical powers that he did not use for the good. Nobody will speak about what these two lords have done because they are too afraid, and Eldus tries to comfort them by ensuring that Meldorath is dead.
In a place outside of Voulhire, the Riva Rohavi are growing in numbers and getting stronger. They hate Voulhire and do not want to see it prosper. So not only does Lord Eldus have to try to pick his people up after two abusive lords in a row, he must also worry about if the Riva Rohavi will decide to attack.
I really liked how the book was written from multiple points of view. The point of view switched every chapter between Galen, Lord Eldus and a few others. There were many characters in the book, but the author did a very good job of describing all of them and giving them purpose to the story line. That being said, the plot for the first half of the book was slow because it was all about characters and setting. I did not like how the first half of the book became slightly boring because there was little action. There was more action in the second half of the book, which made it more interesting than the first half. Also, the book was very well edited as I only found one spelling error.
I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz 3 out of 4 stars because of the slow plotline in the first half of the book. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and magic because Voulhire is a made-up magical land. There were a couple profanities, so I wouldn't recommend this book for someone under the age of 14 or 15. I did enjoy reading this book enough to read the next novel in the series.
