In the beginning of the book, the author shows two parts of the story which are affected by one thing that is the turn. The fact that there were 2 stories and both about the aftermath of the turn makes it increasingly and incredibly mysterious as there is sorrow and pain and loss because of the turn but you can't figure out what happened. It drives the reader to get to the end just to know what happens. It builds in curiosity and you want to read every word in the book carefully so that you don't miss and details and finally understand what's going on.
So many lives are being narrated, but you won't be able to figure out which person is good or bad or are they both. As you questions are answered, raising other questions. Keeps the reader busy with all the suspense.
Ashley and scholar are 2 very different people working on achieving one goal. There adventures together and how their friendship grows is a really beautiful part of the book. All the context is enjoyable specially because both their thoughts have been put up separately and their opinions about each other are truly devastating and fun to read.
On one hand as Ashley and scholar are becoming friends on the other hand cattleprod making his own army gives the hint that the climax would be mind blowing.
The author has connected the dots very well and in a very Savage manner. In the beginning all seems very random but as we move further on the suspense starting building and then all of sudden you are able to relate between the scenarios and the people and the pattern continues. Makes you want to read the book and somehow understand it and hurry to the end all at once. Anger, sympathy, and curiosity all emotions line up till you travel to their world and feel what the characters must be feeling. It's impeccable!
Suspense is such that you can never predict what is going to happen next. A bad thing might happen in a good happy moment or vice versa. You are always hoping for something different and you end up in awe once you have read through it.
