“If the author is successful, the story is unforgettable” Wiliam H. Coles
The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles (2016) is a captivating story that is emotionally charged as well as psychologically intense. Lucy MacMiel defense attorney accepts a charismatic TV evangelist charged with molestation of a child as a client; she couldn’t have imagined the consequences to her life. Nothing would be the same, especially her career, marriage and family relations.
She loses the case, then succumbs to the manipulative charm becoming sexually attracted to the preacher man, following him after he flees to Africa. For this man Lucy abandons her spouse, child and family, she feels cannot live without him. Events unfold to the point where she suddenly is scrambling around for money to leave as quickly as possible returning home, to her husband and family hoping to rebuild her life, somehow continuing on.
Here is a book that many readers will relate to, a story takes you through a journey into the lives of several characters. Some of course are the ones most would want to avoid and some are really likeable. Reverend Bain is a character I don’t want to meet in real life; full of superficial charm, feigned compassion and humility are masks to cover his depravity.
You will learn how far some people will go to get what they want, including all the tricks used to rationalize their behavior. William H. Coles even includes a subplot with a moral and ethical dilemma in context with medical academia that is based on true events. What I liked most is the easy writing style makes for a quick moving page turner, with well written dialogues that seem natural, drawing one along with the characters. What I disliked was the unease I felt knowing that people just like the characters really exist, they live, work and love among us.
We get a glimpse into the lives of people with serious personality disturbance to the point of psychopathy. We learn the far reaching ramifications of how their behavior affects the folks that love and live around them. The secrets, dishonesty and getting what one wants with no regard or care for other human beings. Crazy making to the point that one can clearly understand that sometimes in spite of the personal cost one must take a stand and do the right thing. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars.
