The Surgeon is Clayton Otherson, a successful and accomplished Surgeon in the third largest hospital in New Orleans. He remained one of the best in his field until he took interest in Obese surgery. It was bringing in good money. He started advertising and campaigning for it. He, however, was using a new method he knew little about and that brought about the exposure of certain wrongs in his life. Wrongs that had been subdued before then.

Clayton Otherson's wife, Catherine Otherson, was trapped in a loveless marriage. She was also saddled with the responsibility of raising a difficult teenager and putting up the appearance of a perfect wife at social gatherings. Her husband's mental state, career and their marriage was put to test. Clayton's medical license was about to be rescinded by the decision makers of the hospital. Will his political status, social status, wealth, contributions to the finances and up keep of the hospital, be of any good at this crucial time?

One of the decision makers, Michael Boudreaux, was Clayton's student and mentee. He is now the Chief of Service, his mentor's boss. He felt he owed it to Clayton to ensure his position is secured while he also has an ethical duty to do what is right for the patients, the hospital and the society. In a bid to do what is right, he fell in love with Catherine Otherson.

The Surgeon's Wife generally tells the story of very busy medical practitioners, especially Surgeons. They most times forget to live and enjoy life. They get caught up in the work home daily routines. They become too numb to love. Few of them get to break free from such a boring life. This book tells the story of one such exception.

I like the manner in which the book was written. It is devoid of medical jargons that could bore a layman, yet it is explicit enough to be understood by the readers. It is also mature in the choice of words used and description of romantic scenes. However, there are certain unnecessary details. For example, the detailed description of the Otherson's residence. Also, I do not like the part where one of patients lost her life. It was an emotional part for me.

I am recommending The Surgeon's Wife to all Surgeons, individuals in loveless marriages, teenagers with troubled backgrounds, single and married medical students and individuals searching for true love.

I am rating the book 3 out of 4 stars. It is a good read. It was captivating all through. Even though it is not a thriller, it was interesting from the beginning to the end. I did not rate it 4 out of 4 stars because the ending was inconclusive.
