I recently had the pleasure of reading Elastic Girl by Olivia Rana. This book follows the life of Muthu Tikaram, a young girl growing up in India. Before Muthu Tikaram is conceived, her granddad kills the family's landowner. This demonstration of brutality is an act that shapes Muthu's life from the earliest starting point. This single act causes her grandmother to call her bad luck, which is something Muthu must live with from the moment she is born.

Extremely young, Muthu knows only that her two older sisters are given special treatment while she is compelled to sell rotis on the dusty roadside, longing for a getaway. During her days selling roti, Muthu goes through a dangerous situation and earns herself the nickname Elastic Girl. For a short while, Muthu is given special treatment by everyone. This treatment is short-lived, and her life quickly goes back to normal.

At the point is when the family, along with many other families, get themselves in a desperate situation and end up living by the side of the railroad station. Shortly after a disappointment from the government, Muthu goes to work for The Great Raman Circus of Chennai. Her dad persuades her this is the best way to help free her family from poverty. In her imagination, Muthu envisions that with her remarkable flexibility, she will end up being a star, much the same as her Bollywood idols. With hope in her heart, Muthu agrees, and her father signs her up for a five-year contract.

Muthu's desires for fame and fortune are fleeting, as she is transported into a world of hopelessness and abuse. Following quite a long while of horrible treatment, she designs her get away with her companion Gloria, persuaded that they can make it all alone in Mumbai, the City of Dreams. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn in as Muthu learns numerous life lessons, and deals with numerous awful experiences.

After reading this book, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I give this book such a rating for numerous reasons. The first reason is that there are no spotted mistakes, which shows this book was professionally edited. This helps the book to be easier to read, which allows for a pleasant reading experience.

The second reason I gave this book a 4-star rating is due to the strong emotions this book can cause the reader to feel. As the book is read, the reader can easily envision and even feel the pain that Muthu goes through. This book easily sparks emotion, allowing the reader to truly get lost in reading this. The writer does an incredible job in conveying Muthu's emotions in a way that allows the reader to empathize with her.

The third reason is how well the author illustrates a real-world issue. The way the issue of child trafficking is addressed is truly astonishing. The book allows readers to understand the cruelties, indignities, and injustice of child trafficking. This truly opens the reader's eyes to the shocking presence of child trafficking. I find this to be extremely powerful, and one of the best things about the book.

The fourth and final reason I gave this book 4-stars is the level of detail the author uses to tell this story. This book has the perfect amount of detail, which allows the readers to be compelled, while not boring anyone. I believe the author did a wonderful job describing the events that take place in Muthu's world.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested. This is easily a book you won't be able to put down until the end. The compelling story is more than enough to draw any reader in. The description of a real-world issue also allows the reader to be enlightened about such a horrible problem.
