I am a Christian. I go to church. I have a pastor. I never imagined that pastors are real people. They place themselves so high and make one believe they are so perfect. I had a rethink after reading this book.

Pastoring is Not What You Think; by Elijah Oladimeji is a Christian story that narrates the ordeals of Pastor Job and the Church of All grace. The story exposes the responsibilities, challenges, consequences, and trials of pastoring. These challenges are a major part of the story. In the course of the story, some of his prayers for people are answered by God while some are left unanswered.

Christians reading this book would easily see themselves in this book. Various groups in the church also participate in the church scenes. The author’s language is easy to understand. The constant debate between Pastor Job and his wife, answers a lot of biblical questions in Christendom. I think the story would have been better, if it was written as a play.

I learnt a lot from this book. It was entertaining, hilarious, and educative. The part I enjoyed best was his sermons. I was immensely blessed by them. My reason for that was that it cleared some of my doubts concerning those issues.I also learnt a lot of things.

As I read his several discussions with his wife, I was amazed at the pastor’s wife’s attitude. I’m not against her having a car. I just did not like how she went about it. This was what I liked the least. My reason for this is that she almost became a snare for her husband. I expected her to go about it differently.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I didn’t give it a 4 because it had some typographical errors. I also did not give it a 2 because the book was too interesting for a 2. As a Christian, you would also appreciate and understand your pastor more after reading this book. I was awed by the testimonies shared in this book. However, I was not so comfortable with the pastor’s several soliloquies.

This book would appeal most to Christians, pastors and church workers. It would appeal to anyone who has questions about prosperity messages. This book would appeal least to non-Christians. I learnt a lot from this book. It made me realize that pastors are also human. They have challenges too.

It is always nice to have a reminder that the professional people in your life are real people too! I learned this when I went to work for a fire department and finally got to work closely with these "heroes" that are just regular women and men at the end of their shifts.

Thank you for the review, it sounds interesting to get an insight behind pastoring. It sounds great that this book is educational and that you can learn about something you may not have learnt otherwise. I'm intrigued you think this would work better as a play, I haven't read this book yet but I find that an interesting notion.

This book certainly seems like a powerful read. I agree with you that fellow Christians would definitely identify with this book. It also gives more perspective on what it truly means to be a pastor. Most churchgoers don't stop to think about the trials that pastors go through in order to deliver to everyone who attends their masses. Thank you for a lovely review! :)

I think that there are a few professions that demand more as far as personal lives go, and being a pastor is probably one of them. The congregation, as well as people outside the church, possibly tend to forget that a pastor is still human and errs. I am glad that you enjoyed the sermons and that they helped to clear up some issues for you. Thank you for the review.

This book seems to wonderfully show the trials of a pastor. The debate between the pastor and his wife is something that really catches my attention.
Thank you for the great review.

Your review has made me curious. I know all too well that pastors are real people. My brother-in-law is a pastor, I worked at a large mega-church for 12 years, and I am currently on the elder board for my church. So, yes pastors struggle just like anyone else, but hopefully they look to God to overcome and get through those struggles. I would mostly like to see the authors take on this topic. I wonder how much is based on the story of Job considering the pastor’s name.

The sermons in the book were good but too long and unnecessary. I also wasn't satisfied with Pastor Job's response in the last chapter about the church and money.
