[Following is a volunteer review of "Pastoring is not what you think" by Elijah Oladimeji.]

Pastoring is not what you think by Elijah Oladimeji is a fiction that seeks to portray the day to day life of a pastor. From the pulpit,his family life , relationship with his congregants and how the society perceives God, church and pastors. It's funny how some people such as Rodriguez in the book rush to the pastor in need of prayer yet do not seek a relationship with God but believe that a pastor's prayer will miraculously aid their situation even when they are in the wrong, treating God as a 'Father Christmas', as the author puts it. The pastor in the book dimistifys the prosperity gospel by bringing in his view of prosperity as the wholeness of the spirit, body and soul.
The author also makes a mention of the political happenings of the day such as the bill on gun possession in America and China laws banning of search engines that display unapproved medical sites,extremism and terrorism propaganda in China. The author muses at the grievances genders of the opposite sex have against each other , and also displays displeasure at the government of the day for being slow in passing relevant bills affecting society on a largescale.
The author does a good job in illustrating a pastor as a mortal man with needs, responsibilities towards family, congregants and the society and his job in the ministry. He also brings out the stress of balancing personal interests with the additional burden of handling the problems of church members and those of the society which may often lead to high blood pressure and premature demise of some pastors. For example the demands of Pastor Jobs's wife for a new car yet the church had pending rent which the landlord was insistently demanding for and to add insult to injury, a stranger,Rodriguez was begging for prayers at the verge of his deportation!
On the flipside, the author leaves the reader to guess the conclusions of the counselling Sessions in the book such as in the case of the Williams, plus the answers to the questions addressed to the pastor Job in the book by the young lads on his understanding of women and the question of the young women on whether all men are the same. Additionally, the first and last chapters of the book are about the same topic, 'Blessings ', that is repetitive.
In a nutshell, the author was able to bring the point home that pastoring is really more than we think, it is a job, a commitment and it is demanding too. I therefore give it 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to Christian readers to help them understand what their pastors go through when ministering to them.
