Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon begins as Tom, William, and Myra are preparing to hike to the location Tom’s grandfather is buried to return an ancient artifact to the site. As they are about to leave, Tom’s ex-wife Ruth appears at the door with Sarah, the granddaughter Tom had no idea existed. Ruth insists Sarah must stay with Tom. After some debate over what to do next, they decide to take Sarah on the difficult hike they were about to embark on. As the four journey through the woods together, they end up on an adventure that was much more than any of them expected.
This was an entertaining read that brings you on a detailed adventure through the woods. The writer paints a picture in your head that makes you almost feel as if you are in the forest, hiking alongside the characters. The characters development and interactions draw you in. I ended up feeling very invested in the lives of all the characters, but most of all Sarah. Her strong and sarcastic personality was completely enjoyable to read, and you cannot help but feel empathetic for the struggles she must endure. In fact, my personal favorite parts of the book are the chapters completely in Sarah’s point of view. She goes missing for a portion of the book, and the chapters where she describes what happened while she was gone are an absolutely intriguing journey with a hint of magic. This story had it all, adventure, drama, and even a bit of romance. I saw no noticeable spelling or grammatical issues. Strong Heart would be an enjoyable read for anyone.
I have very few negative things to say about this book. The two issues I had would most likely not even be a problem for some readers. The first flaw I noticed is the book seemed to start off too slow for my taste. The beginning is mostly the characters hiking, and while there are beautiful descriptions and good dialogue, there were times that felt drawn out. This book is worth reading through the slower beginning to Sarah’s disappearance, the part where the action truly begins. The second part that was a problem for me was the ending. Without giving away what happens, the book ends vaguely without any conclusion for many parts of the plot. Perhaps this is a set up for the loose ends to be tied in a sequel? I for one would love to see another book to bring some of the unresolved plot points to a conclusion.
I rate Strong Heart a 3 out of 4 stars. It is a well written and entertaining story. The characters take a hold of you and you truly get invested in the plot line. The only flaws for me were the slow start and the inconclusive ending. These may not be issues for every reader, some may even give this book a perfect score. This book could be relatable to anyone 13 and up, as there are characters in a few different age groups and the writing style is not hard to comprehend. I would recommend this read to anyone with even a slight interest in science, ancient history, and the outdoors.
Strong Heart is an entertaining story which takes the reader on a magical adventure through the forest and through time. The book clearly took a lot of scientific and historical research for some parts. Charlie Sheldon’s writing style is clear enough for anyone to understand, yet so descriptive it is as if you were there in the mountains along with Tom and the others. All the characters are interesting, although I felt the most connection to Sarah. You will not regret picking this book up, it is absolutely worth the read.
