Strong Heart is the story of a thirteen-year-old girl who appeared to be unwanted by the remaining family that she has. When her biological grandmother dumped her at her grandfather’s front door that summer, she found herself involuntarily camping in the middle of a park full of trails where her late great-great grandfather’s remains lay. Together with two old men who seemed to be too old for the hike and a young woman who has a very tough personality and a strong supporter of tribes and its legends, they try to fulfill her grandfather’s unfinished business at that same place.
While the setting of the story is mostly in the middle of the park between the months of May until August, this book focused on Sarah’s journey. Sometimes, as we grow older, we always think that it is us who teach and lead the younger ones, only to find out that we learned much more from them in the end. Like how Sarah, despite of her young age, shows us how strong her heart is to overcome her own life’s struggles, thus the title suggests. From her real life status as an orphan when her mother died of an illness and turned out being rejected by one relative to another after, to their journey during the hike with her grandfather and her own when she got lost for eight days.
As a whole, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I liked how the book tries to give us an idea about human travel and archeological findings through a fictional story. I also admire how the author includes a casual debate between a scientist and a strong believer of Tribal legends. Both with no intention of easily giving in, which makes it interesting to read. However, Sarah’s journey with the razor stone people is quite long. The given names and the span of travel can become boring and confusing to some readers who are not that fascinated in archeology.
The author, Charlie Sheldon with his knowledge and experiences at sea as a seafarer for a long time, shares his ideas on how could the first humans might have arrived and where. He tries to show us what could have happened way back, from more than thousand years ago, when none of us were still here. In this book, Sheldon shows how science can also be an advocate of Tribal legends given that data are present to be used as evidence and support its truthfulness.
Overall, this book is a good read especially for archeology enthusiast. You might argue with what is written in the story, after all this is a work of fiction. Or you may have something to start with on how to answer your own question of who, how, where and when pertaining to ancient stories that you hear from your old folks over and over during your summer stay.
