3 out of 4 stars

I just finished reading Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon. I will rate it 3 out of 4 stars because it was a look into the possible history of humans in North America, combined with some Native American legends and a slight hint of danger.
The story details a grandfather, Tom, his newly acquainted granddaughter, Sarah and their friends, William and his daughter Myra and their experience with an extremely rare and old artifact. Tom found the artifact, called an atlatl, a spear throwing tool made of bone, in his grandfather's possessions years ago when he passed away. Tom, Sarah, and friends go on a camping trip through the woods in the Pacific Northwest to check on Tom's grandfather's grave and return the atlatl to the area. Sarah, merely 13, has a surreal experience. She is somehow connected to the atlatl. Whether it was a vision or perhaps re-lived events from a prior life, Sarah recalls events that happened to her many, many years ago, as Strong Heart, an early inhabitat of the area.
This book is very easy to read quickly, although the writing style is a tad choppy for my taste. I think the story could benefit from more character backgrounds and more details as to the folklore of Native Americans in the area. I yearned for more information and history on the main characters. The author hinted at some very interesting back stories that I think could have been elaborated. The story line was compelling enough to warrant another 200-300 pages.
Additionally, the ending was very abrupt and left me wanting more. Perhaps that was done purposefully so I will seek a follow-up book from this author?
I really liked the stories Sarah told of her adventures as Strong Heart. The descriptions of her companions and their journey were vivid and I could actually see them as I read. I also appreciated the magical and mythical approach the author took without being unrealistic. It also delved into archeology and history of early man, without being too complicated for the average reader. It brought up the possibility that North America was inhabited by man tens of thousands of years earlier than commonly thought and suggests how that may have occurred.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a story with adventure, myth, and a little bit of danger. While reading the book, I could feel the author's affection for the ocean and the Pacific Northwest. I will definitely read other books Charlie Sheldon has written.
