Cross Intents: The Birth is a solid four of five stars. I would classify the book as Fantasy with a writing style comparable to most contemporary young adult fictional sci-fi/fantasy series. What makes this book unique and worthy of the four stars is the very unique approach of exploring spiritual side of Christendom’s most significant event: the birth of Jesus. Wells’ creative attempt to explain the “behind the scenes” work leading up to Jesus’ birth provides a rich and entertaining way of exploring a world that is presumed to exist, but which we have almost no information provided to us through scripture.

I questioned, as I began reading this book, if it was possible to put Jesus into a Fantasy type novel without it being considered sacrilegious or blasphemous for die hard Christians. To my pleasant surprise, I believe Wells was not only successful in preserving the sanctity of Jesus but enhanced through his creative writing new ways for Christians to appreciate and think about who Christ really is to his followers. Wells adhered strictly to the biblical account of the events leading to Jesus’ birth and even quoted from the Bible where relevant in his text.

Wells’ writing flowed smoothly throughout the book making the book an easy and fast read. Wells’ also provided creative details and backstories that further enriched the story making the book feel both full and balanced in relation to detail vs. pace. While any reader of any religion could find the text enjoyable, even from a fully fictional perspective, I think most Christians would find additional value how Wells presents a possible workings of the unsees world that surrounds us.
