Cross intent is a bold and deeply imaginative retelling of the nativity narrative, layered with spiritual warfare, angelic and demonic perspectives, and a creative cosmology that enhances rather than replaces the familiar biblical story. S.R. Wells has crafted a compelling fusion of theology, historical fiction, and speculative fantasy that offers readers a profound and richly detailed exploration of the Incarnation.
What makes this book shine is its unique angle: the story unfolds through the eyes of celestial beings. The conflict between loyal angels and rebellious demons is vivid, emotional, and filled with high stakes. Characters like Elric and Jenli bring depth to the angelic world, while Herod and the demonic commander Molech provide unsettling, layered antagonists. The treatment of the Magi’s journey, in particular, is both respectful of ancient traditions and invigorated with fresh narrative energy.
The spiritual world is meticulously imagined, with its own rules, hierarchies, and interdimensional dynamics. S.R Wells brings a high level of world-building that makes the unseen realm feel tangible and consequential, yet the language remains clear and accessible. The book successfully balances reverence and creativity.
I would rate this book a four-star instead of five because there are a handful of typographical errors. Additionally, certain portions become a bit expository, slowing the otherwise engaging pace.
Despite these small blemishes, the book is a spiritual and narrative triumph. It reframes a well-known story in a way that feels fresh, powerful, and emotionally stirring. The author takes creative risks and, for the most part, they pay off beautifully.
