Can I Be Frank? is a fictional story written by Rob Wyatt. Father “Frank” Francis is the main character and the author reveals how daily mishaps make for a humorous ministry. From the moment Father Frank steps off the plane and lands in the US Customs Office, his uncertainty and confusion remain constant companions for this London born native. Even though errors in judgment are a source of humor throughout this story, the writer does capture the sincerity of heart within Father Frank. Time and again Father Frank makes the wrong choice and the reader can’t help but chuckle from the resulting consequences.
Shortly after meeting his assigned sponsor, Father Bill, it appears that the language, climate, and food choices are just a few changes Father Frank needs to deal with during his transition period; beer, cars, and American customs take up the rest.
After nearly losing his newly assigned parish in Palmetto Lake, Florida, Father Frank questions his worth as a priest. His constant prayers for guidance keep him grounded, and his strength comes from those people he calls friend. Christian or not, the good Lord put them in his path and, together, they make an impressive team. Together they rebuild what one man has taken away.
The momentum builds when Father Frank learns of the migrant workers living in abandoned trailers in a nearby orange grove. Sadly, they are working for less than minimum wage and no benefits. He is appalled to learn that their families crowd together and live in broken down buildings. Realizing the Church turned a blind eye, he becomes obsessed in finding a way to help these migrant families. Putting their heads together, his team dares to put God’s will before the diocese. The author brings you through the obstacles they face, giving each friend individual credit for what he or she brings to the table.
I rated this book 3 out of 4 stars. The typographical errors are the only thing keeping this from a 4-star rating. They surely didn’t take away my total enjoyment in reading it through to the end. This book is well written and captures the realistic challenges of everyday living. I thoroughly enjoyed the comical ups and downs shared within the pages of Father Frank’s life. Lastly, Father Frank’s constant request is finally accepted; and I nearly missed its subtle acknowledgement. If you enjoy comedy, you will find yourself smiling throughout this story.
