Review of The Marsh People
The Marsh people by M. Valentine Williams.
This is a story where dogs are the Masters, and humans are subjected to and controlled by them.
One day, when Scummo came back from work, he found out that her neighbour was really ill. When the neighbour dies, he decides to escape with Kelpin, the neighbour’s child, to provide a better life for her. After some days, they found Darfi, and decided to stay the three of them together.
Scummo, Kelpin and Darfi found another group of free people and decided to stick together. They faced different challenges and dangers (like the eels in the water), but they overcame all of them. The group had to move from one location to another several times to find safer places. The group also wanted to find ways to give the people in the city the opportunity to be free. But some people didn’t want to sacrifice the comforts of the city for freedom without food or safe shelter. Several times, even the free people asked themselves if it was a better option to return to the city and have all their needs covered, but the city was a place with no warmth or closeness.
They also had to face other challenges, like the eels in the pools or inhabitants of other villages.
I think the author has shown a good display of imagination with the story and good character building. I especially like Kelpin and Scummo. Kelpin is tender, intelligent, and practical. She finds a use for everything and helps the community with her numerous ideas. Scummo is very protective, caring, and brave.
I do not know if the author wanted to compare the book’s world with our world, but I do find many similarities between both of them. As in the book, in our world we can find people that just want to live a simple life, do good to others, collaborate, and help the community with their knowledge as much as they can. But we can also find people that believe their way is the only way and they will oppress others only for the sake of having power. Although it is fiction, we can easily identify ourselves with the struggles and desires of the characters in this story.
I do not tend to enjoy stories where people are oppressed, but I have enjoyed the book. I was looking forward to reading chapter after chapter to find out what was going to happen in the end, and the amazing teamwork displayed by the people that escaped from the village made it very enjoyable reading. For that reason, I will rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. Due to the number of typos and grammar errors, I can’t give a better rating.
I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys dystopian stories.
