To the average Joe, it’s just an ordinary pizzeria. To others, it’s the location of their support group, but not your usual support group. In Paul Marino’s book, Misery Loves Company, we follow the journey of Dan as he becomes the latest addition to Serial Killers Anonymous. As uncanny as this gathering seems, the members of this group are even more peculiar. The purpose of this gathering is to help these serial killers get over their sickly addictions. However, as the reader, many questions arise – is there an underlying and more sinister motive behind these gatherings? Could this potentially be beneficial? Will this end well or in bloodshed?

I liked the beginning of the book, as it kept me in a state of suspense. I like the fact that the book was concise. It is also unique, as there aren’t many books that are primarily made up of antagonists.

I didn’t anticipate that the book would become so obscene. As I read further, I became uncomfortable.

I think this book deserves a rating of 2 out of 5 stars. Everybody has their preferences. This book is not one of mine simply because of the grisly acts and details it contains. I am grateful that the author kept the story brief because I don’t think I would’ve been able to endure the contents of this book if it had an excessive number of pages and chapters. It was an original take on the Orpheus myth; however, I didn’t find any similarities between the two apart from murder being one of the main themes. I wouldn’t have known that it was a modern take on the Orpheus myth if it wasn’t stated in the description of the book. I didn’t come across any mistakes, so it was well edited.

I recommend this book to people who love novels that are unorthodox. I recommend it to those who love suspenseful and crime novels. It is only suitable for an adult audience, as it contains profanity, violence and sexual acts. It’s not suitable for anyone who is sensitive, as some heinous acts are described, such as sexual violence, femicide and child abuse.
