Can I be Frank? by Rob Wyatt is a story about Father Frank, who is a Catholic priest from England. The story begins as he enters the United States to minister to his first parish in Florida. As we are introduced to his character, there is a focus on how difficult it is for him to adjust to life in Florida and to life as a parish priest. There are many hilarious and funny incidents in this section of the book. As the story develops, Father Frank finds himself in a war with the parish's main financial contributor. He loses his parish, support from the Diocese and almost loses his life. His faith, the friends that he makes, along with his compassion for the poor, provide the answers to increasing dilemmas.
I found myself cheering Father Frank on in the beginning of the book. The start of this story is full of humor as he adjusts to a new culture, driving on the "right" side of the road, adjusting to the heat, and of course, there are the expectations of his parishioners. As the story unfolds, he finds himself in a "political" war with few options. His problems continue to increase, and he manages to find more trouble as he has compassion on some migrant farm workers. He then turns to his faith and to prayer to find answers to his ever increasing problems.
What I liked about this book was that the author was able to weave together Father Frank's increasing faith and a very compelling story line. Even though the setting for this story is a church parish, it is more about a person (Frank), overcoming past failures and finding strength in his faith, and in the friendships he develops. I enjoyed this book as the story line advanced and Father Frank became more concerned about the "mystery" that unfolds at the church. The title, Can I be Frank? is a play on words indicating that he (Frank) was not sure about being Father Frank. By the end of the story he is sure and his friends confirm his role as parish priest.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys humor and a good story. You do not need to be a Catholic to enjoy this book. The author creates a person that is "accident prone", uncertain about life and somewhat naïve, yet someone that hopes for the best. He is a changed man at the end of the book.
I give this 3 out of 4 stars. The beginning of the book is quite humorous, but I felt it was drawn out a little too long. That said, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it as an enjoyable and positive experience.
